What is Epoxy Resin?

What exactly is epoxy resin? Let’s take a look…

Epoxy resin is a two-part thermosetting polymer system used in crafting, construction, electronics, and coatings. It’s made up of:

🔹 Part A: Epoxy Resin (Base)

🔹 Part B: Hardener (Curing Agent)

When mixed together, these two parts undergo a chemical reaction (called polymerization) that transforms the liquid into a solid, durable plastic.

🧪 Basic Properties of Epoxy Resin:

PropertyDescription
🧊 Starts as liquidMust be mixed with hardener to cure
🕒 Curing timeTypically 12–72 hours, depending on type
💪 Very strongGreat adhesive and structural strength
💧 WaterproofOnce cured, it’s water- and chemical-resistant
🔥 Heat-resistantCan tolerate moderate to high temperatures
✨ Glossy finishOften used for clear, glass-like surfaces

🎨 Common Uses of Epoxy Resin:

ApplicationPurpose
Art & JewelryResin art, river tables, pendants
CraftingSealing and coating surfaces
ConstructionConcrete bonding, floor coatings
ElectronicsPotting (protecting circuits)
MarineBoat building and repair
AutomotiveStructural repairs, carbon fiber work

⚠️ Important Notes:

  • Mixing ratio matters – Usually 1:1 or 2:1 (resin to hardener). Too much or too little hardener = sticky or soft cure.
  • Curing takes time – Unlike UV resin, epoxy needs hours or days to fully harden.
  • Work in a ventilated area – Some epoxy resins can emit strong fumes during curing. Take a look at our Resin Safety Blog for more information on this.
